On the morning of Friday, May 7, 2004, an OV-10A belonging to the California Dept. of Fire and Forestry (CDF) lost the power in one engine shortly after takeoff from Hemet-Ryan airport and made a precautionary landing in a wheat field a quarter of a mile southwest of the airport. The plane, N429DF (Air Attack No. A-310, Manuf. No. 305-17M-11, Navy BuNo 155400) was on a post-maintenance check flight and sustained only minor damage (not very surprising, considering that the Bronco was designed to operate from a runway with 18-inch-high sinusoidal waves on it!) Most importantly, the pilot walked away with no injuries. We're sure that she'll be back in the air soon! CDF spokesman Capt. Rick Vogt told reporters that the CDF, NTSB and FAA are all investigating to determine the cause of the incident.
