Memories On The Hill

By Kristin Koerner

I stood on that hill,
My back to the sea,
And thought of the men
Who died for me

They said goodbye to their families
And picked up their guns
Ran off to the war,
Our brothers, our sons

And sisters and daughters,
Our neighbors and friends
To fight for a cause -
Their freedom defend.

Not a thought for themselves,
They laid down their lives
While their families at home,
They prayed and they cried

Thank God for my freedom
And for those who came home.
But to those who did not,
My life I owe.

So when the time comes,
I hope I can be
As brave as all those
Who died keeping me free.
