March 18, 2002, Larandia, Colombia
By Mike Whaley
The U.S. Embassy in Bogota, Colombia confirmed on 3/18/2002 that a non-U.S. citizen Dyncorp contractor was killed at about 8:00 a.m., March 18, 2002 when his OV-10D spray plane apparently hit a tree following a spray pass during a routine aerial eradication mission over cocaine plantations south of Larandia in the area of La Ceiba, Province of Caquetá, Colombia. The aircraft, the third of five OV-10s flying in formation, exploded on impact. There were no reports of ground fire in the area. The body of the Argentine pilot, Martin Roberto Allen, was recovered, and the State Department will be conducting an investigation with Colombian authorities. The pilot was formerly with the Argentine Air Force.
