Bronco Fest II Pictures
October 8-10, 1999 Grapevine, TX, USA |
|
OBA Historian Chuck "Igor" Burin sent these pictures he took from Bronco Fest 99. These are from the first day of the Fest (Friday)... the registration/join up at the PX in the hotel, and the party at Willhoite's that evening.
All photos © 1999 Chuck Burin. Click on the thumbnails below for the full picture. I met most of these folks but being the senile old fart I am, I couldn't place a few of the faces with names. Please let me know if you can fill in the blanks on these people. All the full-size images are 600W x 400H unless specified otherwise.

A view of VFM's Big Beautiful B-17, the only flying formation ship. This is one of the planes that would be used for the attack planes to formate upon near the base before leaving on a raid. |
A historic gathering: the NAA talk at VFM. From left to right: OBA Secretary/Treasurer Jim "Grump" Hodgson, Lead NAA OV-10 test pilot Ed Gillespie, Lead designer Emerson Smith, and OBA President Ron "SandDollar" Fix. |

A nice 2-seat Hawker Hunter. |
A T-1A trainer. This biz-jet clone is what bomber and tanker crews fly in before they move up to the actual thing. They also serve as transports on occasion. |
One of many black T-38s flown by the Stealth Fighter squadron. Some guys just have all the luck! |

A good shot of the added-on armor plating around the cockpit. This ceramic armor is roughly an inch thick, lightweight, and will stop a 7.62 NATO rifle round at point-blank range. For a detailed view, click here. (WIDTH=1536 HEIGHT=1024 SIZE=526KB) |
Here you can see the thick bulletproof glass plates installed behind the windshield to add to the pilot's safety from small-arms fire. |
Here is the name stenciled on the nose... "Lone Star Rising" The story behind the names on some OV-10s are slightly obscure, but they were so dubbed by pilots in the past. You scale modelers may be interested in this detailed closeup. (WIDTH=1536 HEIGHT=1024 SIZE=411KB) |
The back side of N16854. A nice, generic registration for a black mystery ship!! |
